QuantiFERON®-TB Gold

QuantiFERON®-TB Gold

The QuantiFERON test is used to detect exposure to tuberculosis and/or active infection.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious bacterial infection that primarily affects the lungs but can also target other parts of the body. Infection with TB bacteria doesn't always lead to illness. Consequently, there are two TB-associated conditions: latent TB infection and TB disease. If not managed effectively, TB disease can be fatal.

The QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus test is used to diagnose both latent TB infection and active TB disease. Because this test does not distinguish between latent TB infection and active TB disease, further testing (such as chest X-rays and sputum cultures) may be necessary in the case of a positive result.

Who should take this test?

TB testing is recommended for individuals at higher risk of TB infection, including anyone who has spent time with someone who has TB disease, healthcare workers with potential exposure, individuals with weakened immune systems, people who live or work in high-risk settings (such as correctional facilities, long-term care facilities, and homeless shelters), and individuals from regions with a high TB prevalence (most countries in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Russia).

What is included in this test?

This blood test screens for:

  • Latent TB infection
  • Active TB disease

The QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus test measures an individual’s immune response to TB antigens. It is an important tool for identifying individuals who have been exposed to TB bacteria, whether or not they are currently showing symptoms of active TB disease.

How will taking this test benefit me?

Early diagnosis and treatment of TB are key to successful outcomes. For individuals with latent TB infection, treatment can prevent the development of TB disease. Those with active TB disease should start treatment promptly in order to prevent the disease from progressing to a more severe form and to reduce the risk of spreading TB to others.
